The Voice Studio of Debra Capener, DMA

The voice is an incredibly rich instrument unlike any other, capable of making a vast range of sounds that are as unique as the many vocal styles in today’s music world.

Just as all voices are utterly unique, so are the ways in which people learn. Because of this, I use a highly individualized approach in my teaching methods, designed with student’s technical goals and individual learning style in mind.

Science has proven that good singing technique, regardless of style, is reliant upon some very specific vocal and muscular coordinations. My job as a teacher is to help guide the student to a healthy and optimal sound in ways they learn best.

This includes training the muscles involved in breathing and phonation through specific exercises, using sensory feedback to aid resonance, and body movement and alignment to free body tensions. When the voice is free from strain and the sound “allowed” to emerge, the singer is able to find a higher level of expression through their sound, and the true “art” of singing emerges.

My goal as a teacher is to provide a safe and supportive environment where students can be both challenged and encouraged to discover the sound that is uniquely theirs.

I will always consider it a privilege to help guide my students on such a special and rewarding artistic journey .
